Hyderabad: The Telangana government is boasting that it is promoting Urdu language but there seems a lot of difference between the claims and work on ground. There are many crucial steps needed to be taken in order to make these claims true.

Though the government instructed most visited offices like RDA, GHMC and others to have sign boards in Urdu in the first phase, it is not yet implemented.

Even after four years of Telangana formation, no concrete steps were taken in this regard and several government departments lack Urdu sign boards. The TRS government has announced to appoint the Urdu officers in various government departments but general promotion of Urdu is still lacking.

Urdu is the largely spoken language across Telangana and it is largely mixed with Telugu language to create Deccani here. The Deccani has the apparent influence of Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and other languages on it, said a PhD scholar Syed Majid Ali. It is to be noted that State government has declared Urdu as the second language of Telangana and issued orders to have sign boards in Urdu along with Telugu and English.

Urdu speaking people visit almost all the government offices but lack of proper signboards and lack of Urdu on any stationary proves a difficult task for them to know rules and regulation and instructions of the department. Though the government instructed most visited offices like RDA, GHMC and others to have sign boards in Urdu in the first phase, it is not yet implemented.

Similarly, water board is also one of the offices besides office of the registration and stamps are also visited by a large number of people every day. Collectorates, DEO office, MRO office and other such district level offices also do not have signboards in Urdu.
