Hyderabad: Virasam founder-member Varavara Rao on Tuesday hit out against fatal attacks on academics which he described as unprecedented in the five decade-long history of revolutionary movement. At a press conference in Sundarayya Vignana Kendram,  he accused the State of resorting to killing of many persons including Dr Ramanadham, teachers Azam, Kanakachary, lawyers Narra Prabhakar, Purshotham, Gopi Rajanna.

Rao alleged that Virasam member Prudvi and HCU student Chandan Mishra were ‘kidnapped’ by the police on March 27 in Vijayawada. He said the organisation and human rights bodies had taken the issue to the notice of the two Telugu  governments on March 29, for their release. Rao claimed that the police had presented the two before the media on March 30 in East Godavari district, while announcing that they were caught near Charla in Bhadrachalam.

The Virasam leader refuted the allegation that it was encouraging violence and denied that the two arrested were involved in the conspiracy to murder the HCU Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao. He recalled that Rao himself had stated that there was no threat to him from the Maoists.

Among those present were Virasam city convener Dr Gitanjali, Ramki, Jagan, Sudhakar, Vikrant, Arvind, Anil, Harikrishna, Satish.
