Salar Jung Museum holds special exhibition for kids

Hyderabad: As part of World Heritage Day celebrations, the Salar Jung Museum opened a special exhibition on ‘Rural India as seen through Clay Models’ devoted to children at its Abbas Yar Jung gallery on Wednesday. With the huge collection of toys figurines and other collections this special exhibition will run till April 30.

Each year on April 18, the Museum celebrates the ‘World Heritage Day’ to espouse the importance of preserving the world’s cultures. The Museum officials described the day as ‘The International day for Monuments and Sites’, which was established in 1982 by the International Council for Monuments and Sites or ICOMOS in short. The ICOMOS was founded after a need was identified to protect these valued locations and it saw the coming together of experts from hundreds of related fields.

These include architects, engineers, geographers, civil engineers, artists and archaeologists. This year as part of the ‘World Heritage Day’ celebrations, the education section of the Salar Jung Museum has taken upon itself the task to preserve and showcase the rural environ of India.  

The six sets of clay models showcased in the special exhibition portray the rural scenario in its entirety. Noticeable in this exhibition are built architecture with indigenous material, ranging from thatched huts to two storied tiled structures both secular, religious and utility structures. The collections represents different professions and occupations, which include indigenous irrigation system, farming sectors, leisure activities, educational systems, social occasions, transport systems, costumes, head gears, hair dressings including moustaches, nursing mothers etc.
