World Earth Day celebrated at Zoo

Hyderabad: With an objective to increase awareness about protecting the natural resources, the Nehru Zoological Park celebrated World Earth Day on Sunday. The visiting children participated in drawing and essay writing competitions, where about 120 students took part representing different schools. Raghuveer (IFS), Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Vigilance) distributed the prizes to winners and congratulated all the participants who took part in the competitions. 

Speaking on the occasion, he said that it was important to understand what sustainability truly means and it was important to inculcate environment – friendly habit to lead a green lifestyle and avoid plastic use in our daily life. He called upon the participants to take part in the environment awareness activities, protect wildlife and protect forests, plant more trees in your localities, use paper and cloth bags while shopping instead of plastic bags, use water and power efficiently, avoid littering around during travel, use dust bins whenever required and be a responsible tourist by practicing eco-tourism.

Snakes awareness programme was also organised at the event by the Friends of Snakes Society. Arun, a member of the friends of snakes society conducted the programme where he demonstrated and explained to the visitors about the venomous and non-venomous snakes and how to identify them and which are the snakes commonly found in human habitations.

Ms Pratusha, a volunteer and well known personality of Radio Mirchi also conducted an awareness programme on the eve of World Earth Day. She explained to the visitors about the use of polythene bags. She also explained about single use plastic items like plastic glass, straw, packing plastic and wrapper and their hazardous effects on the earth. It takes about 100 to millions year to get decompose  depending on the type of plastic, she said. 

Syed Maqsood Mohiuddin, Assistant Conservator of Forests, M Laxman, Assistant Curator-1, Gynaneshwar, Assistant Curator-2, H M Hanifulla, Zoo PRO, M Sandeep, and Laxmi Narayana, Biologists also participated in the programme.
