Hyderabad: Indian Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) registry in 2010 reported a dismal kidney transplantation figures of 2 per cent of which 95 per cent were live transplants and less than 5 per cent cadaver transplants. With increasing awareness of organ donation, the cadaver organ donation is increasing day by day especially in Telangana.

Swap transplant has a legal binding and has been approved in the Thota act, yet “lack of awareness” and motivation among the medical fraternity prevent its implementation.

However, the Deccan Hospital had an employee of Singareni Collieries who had a genetic kidney disease which made his kidneys large and non-functional but, was following the medication of Deccan Hospitals for six months and with the intention of transplantation, he got his kidneys removed. Later, during a casual discussion the doctors mooted the idea of swap transplant and made the swap transplantation successful.
