In the last one year close to five gyms opened in AS Rao Nagar and a few more in Sainikpuri and Neredmet. The gym culture is growing by the day thanks to increasing awareness on health and the need to look slim. What is interesting is more and more women are heading to gyms. Aishwarya, a 20 year-old college student says, “I enjoy doing work-out on a regular basis.

I am a state-level basketball player and it is very important for me to work out and be fit. This also gives me an advantage as I’ll become slim and by the next tournament I will have to reduce almost 10 kg.”

Surbhi, a 24-year-old working woman says, “I want to become fit. I am not able to take care of my health and my body due to my job. The only way I can put myself fit is through a gym.” From ECIL to Sainikpuri many gyms have come up such as Pro6 gym, Talwalkars, VR FIT&U, Fitness turf, Fitness Point and many more. Different gyms have different packages, timings and tariffs.

The tariffs per month begin from Rs 700 to Rs 5,500 per month depending on the gym one wishes to go to. Pro6 gym charges Rs 200 for membership fees and Rs 700 monthly. Coming to gyms like Talwalkars the tariffs begin from Rs 5,500 monthly and 26,000 per year. The tariff is the same for both men and women in gyms.

“There are personal trainers who charge separately. There are a lot of women who have personal trainers. Most of them are the college going girls and working women. The girls obviously come to become slim and fit,” said trainer Tony of Talwalkars Gym.

In what can be termed as a new trend, many women in the 40-50 age group too are coming to gyms. “There is a new found confidence and an urge to get fit and many women do not mind spending thousands to get fit and fine. Most of them want to shed extra kilos that they piled up over the years,” says Charan, a trainer.

“The timings for both men and women is the same. Most college goers prefer the 5.00 am to 6.00 am slot. Housewives and working women like the evening slot,” says trainer Mohammed Sabir Mohiuddin of Pro6 gym.
