Vasavi Nagar: It is a dog’s day out it seems at Vasavi Nagar and the surrounding colonies. In spite of repeated complaints to the Secunderabad cantonment Board (SCB) which apparently does not have a dog catching squad has thrown its hands up and as a result, the strays are having a field day.

S V Revathi, a resident of Vasavi Nagar is exasperated and vents her anger, “There is no use of calling the SCB officials as no action is taken and when we called the Blue Cross too there was lukewarm response.”

When contacted, SCB sanitation wing officials said, “There was a time when a whole unit was dedicated to catch dogs and over the last few years the job was being given to GHMC who charged a sum.” Adding in the same breath, the official added, We did catch dogs, sterilized them and left them back in Bapuji Nagar last month but we still have to do the same in Vasavi Nagar.”

In the meanwhile, residents are literally in tenterhooks as it is almost difficult for children to play in the open. Mohanlal, a retired railway employee says, “News of how a 17-year-old boy was mauled by a pack of dogs in north India is scary and we are taking no risk in sending out children to play outside.”

Vaishali from Vasavi Nagar, Kharkhana, said “There are many street dogs in our area and are making our life miserable. We are not able to walk on the street after 11pm and they are chasing people.” An IT employee who returns home at 2 p.m in the night shared his anxiety, “Though I get a drop but the few yards that I  need to walk to get into my house is dreadful as almost a dozen dogs play havoc.”
