Designer kurtas new fad for Ramzan

Charminar: Designer Kurtas or ethnic wears is becoming the first choice of youngsters this Ramzan in Old City. Most of the youth are purchasing branded readymade or tailor-made for this Ramzan Eid. Most sought after attires are the designer kurta pyjamas, pathanis, Indo-Western, Arabian wear (Jhubba) despite the myth that youth prefer western wear for festivals or on the occasion of any special event.

Shops selling designer wears are flooded with the people and tailors for the Kurtas and other ethnic wear have stopped taking orders. The demand for the ethnic wear is generally high. Kaleem Quadri a designer from MK Designers said that the business of tailors goes up in the month of Ramzan. He said, “For some years ready-made cloths ruled the roost but people are now preferring tailor-made because they can choose their colour and pattern more freely.”

Youth are preferring Short Length Kurta, 3 cuts, cross buttons, Kurta with Puna Pants, Loose Salwars besides traditional Arab wear Jhubba and a Pathanis suites, he explained. Stitching of a Pathani costs Rs 600 whereas the designer Kurta with Puan Pant costs Rs 800 in the current market. Khaja Pasha of Modesto Tailors said that people in Old City prefer colourful Kurtas and Jhubba. 

He has been in the market since 1972. He said that Jhubba is stitched at a cost of Rs 600 which needs 3.1 meters of cloth. He said, “The Ramzan season is the busiest time for us and each worker stitches about 5 to 6 pieces every day. Workers do their work up till late night.” Not only Eid but youth also wear Kurtas for Dussehra and Diwali nowadays, he pointed out.

M D Khaled, a tailor, said that he is working since 40 years when he was just 8 years old and attained expertise in making Kurta Pyjama besides different other Men’s wear. He said that youth also approach him with patterns downloaded from internet.

Interestingly, workers in large designer shops earn more than Rs 15000 to Rs 20000 during the Ramzan season. Mohammed Ayaz from Santosh Nagar said that that a he prefers trendy designer Kurtas for Eid. I get my dress tailor-made in order to ensure the fitting is correct, he said.
