Old City residents on the edge over stray dog menace
Charminar: Several areas in Old City are facing the dog menace and complaints have been on the fore once again. Increasing number of dogs in areas like Charminar, Jangammet, Falaknuma, Ghansibazar, Hussaini Alam and others is worrying the people.
Some incidents of dog bite have already occurred in the past two weeks. Parents are specifically worried since the schools have started and children would be the vulnerable target of the stray dogs.
Ibrahim Khan from Hussaini Alam said that his two sons study in a private school in the area and he cannot let them go on their own. He said, “Packs of stray dogs roam around the school near the garbage bin and it is very dangerous for the little children to walk up to the school on their own. My children were recently chased by the stray dogs.”
Similar incidents were reported from other areas like Kala Pathar, Falaknuma and Phool Bagh too. Khaleel Ahmed from Misri Gunj said that lack of sanitation and apathy in removing the garbage by the GHMC staff leads to flocking of stray dogs in the streets thus making the citizen vulnerable.
He said, “Civic authorities need to take immediate and necessary measures to keep the population of stray dogs in control since the menace enhances during rainy season.”
Some people have approached the GHMC local offices to register their complaints but no action has been taken by the officials so far. The situation in slum areas is worst following the poor sanitation and basic facilities of drain.
Lack of cleanliness and garbage are the major reasons for the stray dogs to grow in population and occupy the streets.
