GHMC Commissioner asks vendors to cooperate on plastic ban
Secunderabad: On the occasion of International Plastic Free Day, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy, along with officials, on Wednesday toured Monda Market and urged all vendors to cooperate on plastic ban in the city.
Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner said daily on average in a family five plastic carry bags are being used far procuring and carrying of grocery items, milk, vegetables, fruits and for Non-Veg items like mutton and chicken. In GHMC limits there are 20, 00,000 households and per day there will be 1 crore plastic carry bags is being used. Janardhan Reddy said that the plastic carry bags were non-bio degradable solid waste products and carcinogenic in nature when in contact with the food items cause severe ill effects on health of human beings, he added.
The Commissioner said for preventing the cause the GHMC was promoting usage of steel boxes to carry chicken and mutton etc or jute bags in place of plastic carry bags. Promoting usage of bio degradable jute carry bags and leaf plates as a alternative if steel boxes are not available. Reddy inspected a mutton shop and asked them not to encourage customers to use plastic carry bags. He toured all Non-Veg shops and motivated them to say no to plastic bags and explained the ill effects of plastic carry bags.
