Hyderabad will be ragging-free, vows Police Commissioner
Basheerbagh: “There will be no ragging cases this year, last year merely two ragging cases were reported in the city,” said Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar while addressing the college university and institution’s management authorities. In an anti-ragging awareness programme conducted at Police Commissioner’s office at Basheerbagh on Wednesday.
The Commissioner stressed for the need of anti-ragging cell in colleges and institutions and advised the authorities to spread awareness through posters banners and make it mandatory in collage prospectus. Anjani said, “Strict action will be taken for prohibition of ragging act 1997.” Deputy secretary of University Grants Commission (UGC), R Manoj Kumar listed out set of rules constituted by the Supreme Court and the revelations by UGC. And declared that the new anti-ragging helpline number was in working condition and the number 18000-180-5522 could be reached 24x7 by the students.
Professor B Rajendra Naik from Osmania University said, “Osmania University has an anti-ragging committee department at college and university levels to ensure safety of students. However, four major incidents have been reported so far this year which were addressed and counselled in the campus.”
“Ragging is now replaced by nagging, ragging was meant to break ice between the students which was misused in the past few decades and has turned into a criminal offence now. There is a severe need of anti-ragging committees and counselling professionals in collages and institutions which has to be fulfilled at any cost,” said Additional commissioner of police D S Chauhan.
Shikha Goel, Additional commissioner of police, said, “One of the major issues that restricts students from complaining is hesitation, most of the ragging issues stay grounded. To avoid such circumstances colleges have to install anti-ragging committees, and police department will ensure safety by monitoring near college areas and through 2 lakh CCTV’s installed across the city.” The event was organised by She teams Hyderabad.
