Brahmanapally villagers gherao Food Corporation Chairman
Toopran: Brahmanapally villagers of Toopran mandal in Medak district intercepted the State Food Corporation Chairman G Election Reddy on Monday by staging a sit-in protest in front of his vehicle against the merging of their village into the proposed Toopran municipality in the garb of development.
On the wake of rumours of merging, a large group of villagers gheraoed the Chairman, who came to inaugurate the cemetery and bus shelter at the village, and demanded the withdrawal of the proposal citing that they would be deprived of MGNREG Scheme as daily-wage labours if their village is merged into the municipality.
The villagers including some of the TRS activists warned the Food Corporation Chairman of committing suicide if the government blindly goes forward with the proposal for the sake of some persons of their village for their personal gains. The ruling party will have a hard time during elections, warned the villagers. The Corporation Chairman Election Reddy tried to pacify the agitating women by assuring them that he would try to solve the matter by presenting their issue to the notice of the Chief Minister. Later, the impeded chairman left the place by another vehicle after alighting his blocked vehicle.
Toopran is among five major gram panchayats in erstwhile Medak district including Ramayampet, Narsapur, Narayankhed and Cherial which were proposed to be upgraded as municipalities by the government in the past by seeking opinions from the people.
