Vikarabad:  The Supreme Court on Wednesday sentenced the Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) management to pay a fine of Rs 2 crore for indulging in irregularities in running the college. The college management resorted to irregularities to renew the third batch of the MBBS furnishing false information about the patients in spite of the fact that the MIMS has no patients.

A SC bench comprising Justice SI Babji and Lavu Nageswara Rao gave the verdict on the basis of the MCI experts’ team conducted several inspections of the college and recommended to the government not to permit renewal of the third batch admissions. The MCI conducted the inspection again in March and recommended to the government against according renewal. Challenging the decision, the college management filed a case in the Supreme Court. On the directions of the court the MCI once again inspected the college and submitted its recommendations to the government.

The college once again moved the Supreme Court. Former Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi argued in favour of the petitioner.  His contention was that the inspections carried were not done as per the rules. How can anybody conclude the patients to be fake, he questioned. The bench heard both sides and upheld the Center’s decision. The fine amount should be paid within four weeks.

When The Hans India contacted the college management for clarification, the management responded stating that the court had given some time to the medical college to pay the fine. It denied any irregularities taking place in the hospital. The management is in a mood to approach the court once again.
