In Retrospective by senior artist Surya Prakash

Update: 2018-12-03 05:30 IST

India Fine Art presenting an exhibition, ‘In Retrospective’ by senior artist Surya Prakash on December 8 at State Gallery of Art from 5:30pm. The art show will be continued till December 23 between 11am and 7pm. Surya Prakash’s coming of age coincided with the firm establishment of the modernist movement pioneered by the progressives as a refreshing alternative to the Bengal school—a watershed event in Indian art history. The emphasis, however, continued to be on the long-established tradition of figuration.

Retrospectives are crowning achievements of an artist’s career. And one in a museum setting is the ultimate holy grail, elusive to all but the most celebrated of artists. The exhibits are compendiums of bodies of work, typically arranged chronologically to illustrate the progression of an artistic journey. They are structured to present a discernible trajectory of an artist’s oeuvre; and the accompanying perspicacious, and often, panegyric writings act as essential tools in understanding and appreciating the art.

Surya’s canvases traverse a wide array of subjects—from discarded heaps of junkyard automobiles to desolate landscapes, from barren leaves to the microcosm of lotus pods, to expansive lush slices of nature. His body of work has brought to fore a penchant for romanticism and spirituality: in Jargon of Junk—perhaps, the most consequential of his career—he metamorphosed the banality of automobile junk into soft, seductive forms that turn the inorganic into the organic, evoking a sense of romantic empathy.
