Naypyidaw: Myanmar president Htin Kyaw on Wednesday announced his retirement from the post citing his willingness to 'take a rest' due to ill health.

Kyaw was the first democratically elected President of Myanmar after winning the Presidential elections held in March 2016.

Though, Kyaw was just a ceremonial leader while opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi acted as the de facto president.

As per media reports, Myanmar President Office's Facebook page posted, "71-year-old President Htin Kyaw was retiring from his duties".

The statement further said the post left vacant shall be filled within seven working days in line with the article 73 (b) of the (Myanmar's) constitution.

Htin Kyaw was a supporter of India's Act East Policy and was also the first Myanmar president to visit India in 2016.
