Buddaram Reservoir to be a reality soon
Wanaparthy: With the Irrigation officials completing survey works of the decade-old pending Buddaram Reservoir project in Wanaparthy district, soon the parched lands in the district will get irrigation water through its right and left canals covering almost 28,000 acres of ayacut.
Earlier this year in January, Irrigation Minister Harish Rao visited the Buddaram Reservoir and announced that the government was actively perusing the works of the long-pending reservoir and said the project would be taken up as an ‘online’ reservoir, which means it would have continuous flow of water.
In fact, the proposals to transform the Buddaram Peddavagu Lake into a reservoir was conceptualised and conceived way back in 2008, during the Congress government in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh as part of the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) and a foundation stone was laid by the then Minister Chinna Reddy from Wanaparthy.
However, the survey works related to the project was halted and could not be taken forward due to various reasons. However, after the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government came into power in Telangana and as the government was giving utmost priority to irrigation projects in the State, proposals to construct the Buddaram Reservoir came to fore as part of the 28th Package in Kollapur mandal and survey works were conducted.
It was found that more than 28,000 acres of ayacut was existing under this project in Peddakottapally mandal. “As the survey for the proposed project has been completed, very soon we will start the construction works as and when the government clears its nod. With Buddaram Reservoir coming into being, the entire parched lands under Wanaparthy district will come under irrigation, benefiting lakhs of farmers under its Ayacut,” informed Krishna, Project Assistant Engineer, Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation project.
The areas that would be irrigated under the left canal include Gopalpet, Chennoor, Appayapally, Wanaparthy, Tadipatri and Chennoor and those on the right canal include Wanaparthy, Khillaghanapuram and peddamandadi mandals in the district.
