Khammam: The International Women’s Day was celebrated by the leaders of the District Women Congress at Peddathanda under Khammam Rural mandal on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, the District Women Congress President Bandi Mani expressed unhappiness over increasing number of attacks on women and girls.

There is a lot of discrimination against women in the society and even in the 21st century, the women were being treated as second-class citizens. There were no proper facilities of education and health for women, she pointed.

Domestic violence, dowry harassments, rapes and murders were still going on against women in the society. Even though the women accounted for 50 per cent of the total population, there was no proper representation of women in Assembly and Parliament, she alleged. She appealed to the people, setting aside their difference, to fight unitedly against crimes being perpetrated on women.

Later, the leaders of District Women Congress cut a cake and distributed fruits to the children here at Mentally Disabled Centre. Congress leaders Narayanamma, Vinoda, Indira, Damayanthi, Sandhya and Shireesha were present along with others.
