Mahbubnagar: Embarking on the new public distribution system (PDS), the district administration of Mahbubnagar has launched portablity PDS system from April 1. With this new system in place, ration cardholders can draw subsidised rice, dal, oil and other items from any fair price shop across the district.

According to District Supplies Department official S Priayadarshini, the launch of this new mode of distribution of ration will really help the people who are away from their home and working at some other places.

“Usually most of the poor people who are getting PDS items go to various places for work and they tend to lose their subsidised items. But now the State government has for the first time successfully implemented the portability of PDS system in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts and now after its success there we have adopted it and launched here in Mahbubnagar and hoping that it will facilitate large number migrating workers to avail their PDS items with ease at any of the PDS distribution shops across the district,” said the DSDO of Mahbubnagar district.

At present there are 804 fair price shops across the district, distributing ration items to more than 3.70 lakh ration cardholders benefiting more than 10 lakh beneficiaries in the district. “We usually do not stay in one village. We move from one mandal to other wherever the contractor shows us the work.

Earlier we used to lose our ration items as the earlier system mandated us to take ration from only the designate fair price shop. But with the introduction of portablity families like ours who do not stay at one place will greatly benefit,” said Vadthya Ramulu Nayak, a road worker from Shankarayapally village of Jadcherla mandal in Mahbubnagar.
