Khammam police crack down on gamblers, gutka smugglers

Khammam: The police seem to be on a mission to purge anti-social elements that have been posing a major menace to the law and order in the city. They have been swooping down on gamblers and dealers of illegal tobacco products in the last two days in order to put a check on their activities.

In a swift move, the Khammam One Town police descended on a gambling den at Tummalagadda in the town and arrested five persons including the owner of the house where they were gambling Rama Rao.
The police also seized Rs 9,070 cash, playing cards and five cell phones from them. The arrested persons were handed over to the Station House Officer of One Town for further action. 

In another incident, on credible information the police raided a house and seized illegal gutka packets and took into custody D Padma, in whose house the banned substances were stored. She was handed over to Khammam Urban police station for further investigation. The raid was conducted by Circle Inspector Anjaneyaulu on instructions of Assistant Commissioner of Police Rahman. 

According to official sources, the police are hellbent to put a check on all criminal activities in the district headquarters and are gathering information on such illegal operations. They are quick in responding to any such information.  

A senior police official said people of Khammam were feeling happy and secure due to the police quick actions. According to Khammam Police Commissioner Tafsir Iqbal, in May alone they received 2,719 phone calls on toll free number 100.

Following the calls, a total of 127 cases were filed, he said adding that of these two were murders, two were attempts to murder, six were harassments of women, four robberies, 16 general complaints, 61 accidents, 17 suspicious deaths, one was petty case and 19 cases were in other categories.
