First ever floating market unveiled in West Bengal

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday unveiled the first floating market in Kolkata during a programme at the Netaji Indoor Stadium.

The lake at Patuli in South Kolkata has been transformed into the floating market which is 400 metres long and 60 metres wide. 

According to the reports, Rs 6 crore has been spent to set up the market, make customized boats and Rs 4 crore to build an underground sewer network for the adjoining area. 

The market will see shopkeepers on boats selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, meat among other produce. To set up the market, two water bodies have been merged. Wooden walkways supported by wooden beams have been constructed for the shopkeepers and buyers to reach the boats.
