Unseasonal rains damage crops, wreak havoc for farmers in Telangana

Three districts in Telangana - Nizamabad, Mancherial and Nirmal were hit by unseasonal rains and hailstorm wreaking havoc for farmers with the standing crops of paddy, red gram and tobacco crops over 4,221 hectares damaged.

While the estimated financial damage is yet to be assessed by the authorities, the hailstorm has affected a total of 6,710 farmers.

In Nizamabad, heavy rains were recorded with maize, red jowar, paddy, sesame and tobacco crops damaged. 

According to the reports, 288 hectares of maize crop, 1,428 hectares of red jowar crop were damaged in 23 villages affecting nearly 2,939 farmers while

Paddy, maize, red jowar and sesame crops were damaged in 46 villages affecting 3,661 farmers.

Nirmal recorded the highest of 4cm rainfall in Telangana, with crops grown over 10,000 acres of land damaged besides killing a cattle grazer.

Maize grown in 8,017 acres of land were lost and 35 electricity poles were damaged. In Mancherial district, 136 poles were damaged.

A warning has been issued by the Meteorological Department on Tuesday in North Telangana.
