Six dowry harassment cases registered over one month
Hyderabad police have registered six dowry harassment cases over the past one month.
In 2017, 25 cases were registered while in 2016, 20 cases were logged. Assistant commissioner of police, SHE Teams, D Kavitha informed that nearly 2,000 cases of domestic violence were registered last year and 15 percent of them are due to dowry harassment.
She further stated that even educated and economically-sound people are involved in these cases.
According to the police, several cases of dowry harassment go unreported because many women are scared to against their in-laws and society.
Founder of Shaheen Women's Resource and Welfare Association, Jameela Nishat shared that such cases were rampant with marriages turning into a business and even the bride’s family are at fault despite the groom's family being held responsible.
With nearly 100 cases of domestic violence are registered where 80% of them are related to dowry, Activists believe people’s mindset needs to change and more women need to speak against such atrocities.
