Hyderabad University students condemn rape attempt, demand security enhancements

Students Union of the University of Hyderabad denounced the alleged rape attempt on a 19-year-old girl on the campus and demanded the varsity to ensure the security and safety of women.

Four juvenile boys on Friday allegedly attempted to rape the girl student after entering the campus reportedly to steal copper wires.

The incident took place near a lake on the campus when the woman along with her male classmate, both post-graduate students, were having a discussion.

The four boys were arrested on Saturday and taken into custody. 

According to the statement released, the Union said, “We, the Students Union 2017-18, University of Hyderabad, strongly condemn the increasing instances of assault and abuse inside the campus and demand strengthening the boundary walls, installation of street lights, orientation with the security.”

The Union, terming the incident as a shame on the part of the university administration, also said that a general body meeting will be held shortly to discuss regarding the ‘rise in incidents related to sexual harassment and assaults’ on the campus.

It also sought improvisation of internal mechanisms to improve the security and ensure that the campus remained a safe space for all the students.
