Telangana students to get 25% seats exclusively reserved in private universities in state

Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Kadiam Srihari on Tuesday introduced the draft Bill of Telangana State Private Universities in the Assembly stating that the students from Telangana would have Twenty-five percent seats exclusively reserved in various courses offered by the private universities in the state.

The draft bill reads, “In the case of an existing institution, which is established as a university under this Act, the rule of reservation in admissions implemented by that Institution, for the existing seats of that Institution, shall be continued even in the university established under this Act.”

With full autonomy to start various academic programmes and in the admission process, the private varsities which will come up in Telangana, however, have to stick to admission norms committed to the state government in its projects proposal.

The existing rule of reservation will continue in case of existing institutions which will turn into varsity.

According to the draft, an application has to be sent to the government by any sponsoring body wanting to start private university detailing the purpose, vision along with fee particulars and courses.

The Bill intends to set up and maintain a campus with international standards of education while developing the infrastructure for research in higher education. If the Bill is passed, the way is clear for private universities across the state. Several companies like Reliance has expressed interest in setting up a university in Telangana.
