Hyderabad: 26 parents arrested for letting their minor kids drive

Update: 2018-04-27 15:50 IST

In a bid to stop minors from driving on public roads, the Hyderabad traffic police are taking strict measures. 26 parents have been arrested in the city in the last two months after their children were found behind the wheel.

Joint Commission of Traffic Police, Hyderabad, told news agency ANI, "In March, 20 parents were sent to jail by the court and this month six parents have been jailed.”

The traffic police in Hyderabad are putting forth compulsory counseling sessions and registering of First Information Reports or FIRs.

Earlier this week, four second-year engineering students drove a four-wheeler on to a sidewalk, killing a 48-year-old man who was sleeping on the pavement in Kushaiguda, along with his son Mahesh.

While the police stated that the girl behind the wheel had not consumed alcohol, CCTV footage showed the four girls coming out of a bar a short while before the accident.

Following this, the excise department sealed the bar as they are not allowed to serve liquor to anyone under 21 and the girls were between 19-20 years old.

However, the bar owner claimed that the girls had shown a certificate showing they were old enough to drink.
