New patterns too smart?: 5.5 lakh students fail BSEB’s inter compartment examination

Patna Only 38.78% students have passed their  Intermediate (Class XII) compartment examination (science, commerce and arts) conducted by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). The results were released on Sunday. There is a major decline of 32.56% compared to the last year results (71.34%).

Around 1.52 lakh students are said to have appeared for the compartment examination which was conducted between July 13 to 20 at 205 examination centres across the state under strict invigilation and CCTV surveillance. Total 59,147 students, including 25,236 girls, passed the examination.

In science stream, around 1.14 lakh students appeared for the examination and only 42,385 got through, including 14,735 girls, while 1,091 students took the exam in commerce stream and 504 were declared pass, including 130 girls. While girls outsmarted the boys in arts stream with the pass percentage of 28.1% compared to boys’ 15.9%. Total 36,873 students appeared in arts stream, of which only 16,241 passed.

Addressing a press conference, BSEB chairman Anand Kishor said it was the first time that compartment examination was conducted on new pattern that was adopted by the board last year. As per the new format, 50% objective questions were asked in all papers and students answered in OMR sheet provided to them during the exam. “Students who failed in one or two papers in the board exam appeared for the compartment exam,” said Kishor, adding that total eights sets were prepared for the compartment exam.

This year, altogether 11.92 lakh students had appeared for Class XII board exam and 6.31 lakh cleared it, making the pass percentage 52.95%. Total 92,726 students made it to the first division, 4.3 lakh passed with second division and 99,395 passed with third division. However, 5.5 lakh students failed in the exam.
