Pollution levels in Hussain Sagar reduced weeks after Ganesh immersion

The pollution level in Hussain Sagar has been reduced a few weeks after the Ganesh immersion, according to Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB). Thousands of idols were immersed in the Sagar during the nine-day festivities.

On Saturday, the TSPCB released a report stating that there is a high rise in pollution levels in the water when compared to before and after Ganesh immersion. After the immersion on September 23, the board officials had collected the water samples from the lake near Buddha Statue and analysed that the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level was zero at the area.

DO level in the water should not be less than 3-4 mg/l as it crucial for the survival of aquatic life. The DO level which is less than 2 mg/l in an area is said to be dead zones, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA), USA. Meanwhile, the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) which measures the DO levels should be 3 mg/l but it has increased to 34 mg/l.

However, the decentralisation of Ganesh idol immersion showed a good impact on the decrease in pollution levels.
