New scheme launched to put an end to infant mortality

Mumbai : On Tuesday the state cabinet had approved a scheme, to tackle the infant mortality. Under which the first child being born of a woman in a government hospital would be getting a free baby care kit. This is one of the measure that is being  taken worldwide to end the infant mortality.

Each kit would be costing around ₹2,000 and the State government has allocated ₹100 crore for the project.

The kit will be comprised of baby clothes, nappy, bedding, towel, thermometer, massage oil, mosquito net, blanket, plastic sheet, shampoo, toys, nail-cutter, hand gloves, socks, hand sanitiser for mother, body wash liquid, woollen clothes, and wrapping sheet.

An official from the Women and Child Welfare Department had said that, “A baby care kit is one of the most important tools to check infant mortality in developed countries. It is being supplied on priority. States such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana provide such kits to newborns which helps them control infant mortality rate.”

The mother will be given access to the baby  care kit after her name is enrolled in this scheme at the government hospital or primary health centre.
