Bengaluru: After a astrologer told a 45-year-old businessman that the couple would be having a girl child, who were already parents of three daughters and were expecting a fourth child. The businessman had allegedly forced his wife to get an abortion. Even after the abortion, he continued harassing her for a divorce, and he also forced her to seek help of the women’s helpline which is run by the Bengaluru police.

The woman, who had obeyed her husband and aborted the pregnancy, has now approached the helpline, which is located in Parihar. Sources at Parihar said that the woman has complained of assault. “The man has been demanding divorce so that he can marry another woman who can bear a boy,” they said.

The counselor's had said that, the couple had moved to Bengaluru 15 years ago from Madhya Pradesh. In 2014, The husband made several attempts to get the doctors disclose the gender of the baby. When they refused, he approached an astrologer who categorically said that the woman will have a girl child. The man forcefully got his wife to abort the baby and without the knowledge of the other family members. Forced to consume some pills for the abortion, the health condition of the woman deteriorated.

In 2016, the woman became pregnant again and the man went to the astrologer and he was told that it will be a boy this time. However, the astrologer was proved wrong and the woman gave birth to a girl. The man then began to vent his frustration on his wife. He assaulted her, demanding divorce. The woman refrained from taking the help of the cops, thinking that her husband would soon realize that she’s not the one who decides the gender of the child.

BS Saraswathi, counselor, told a source that, “The husband admitted that what he did was wrong. What is shocking is that he is well-educated, yet is adamant on having a male child.”

Rani Shetty, who is the in charge of Parihar, said that the man has promised to take care of his wife and children. “He has given an undertaking not to harass his wife. Our counsellors are continuing to hold sessions for the couple.”
