Massive fire breaks out at the Pachanady landfill

MANGALURU: On Wednesday afternoon after a massive fire broke out in the landfill, various firefighters and other emergency services have been working constantly at the Pachanady dumping ground.

After the fire was brought under control on Thursday, the entire area has been submerged under thick smoke.

The locals have said that, the fire at the landfill was spread over acres of land. After a few hours, because of heavy breeze, the fire accumulated force, and the flames took over by leaping into the sky. Along with the flames, thick smoke was emitted, and a foul smell was spread across the area.

Locals have alleged that the fire must have been started by some miscreants. However, the officials from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) have denied it, and said fires are common during this season, due to temperatures reaching its peak.

On Thursday Mohammed Nazeer, commissioner, MCC, who was directing the operations to put out the fire at the landfill, said that it’s a common thing that garbage dumping areas catch fire because of chemical reactions. “The fire which broke out on Wednesday is totally under control, but smoke is still there in the area. It may take another two days to bring everything under control,” he said
