BENGALURU: On Thursday the students belonging to the Maharani’s Arts, Commerce and Management College for Women had appealed to the chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, who was at the national seminar on ‘Reinventing the wheel of Indian higher education in the knowledge economy era’, to save their playground, where the administration of the college is planning to build a hostel.

An NCC student told the CM that, “We have only one playground, which is used by NCC and NSS and also for sports activities. But the college and the higher education department want to augment infrastructure and are considering building a students’ hostel on the playground. Please save our playground.”

The students had also demanded for, an opening of either Indira Canteen or Appaji Canteen on the campus; free bus passes for all the students instead of only SC/ST students and opening of a healthcare centre in the college area, where different institutions are located.

As the CM agreed to open a primary healthcare centre near the college, he said that, “I’ll take up the issues with higher education department officials next week. We’ll ensure that roads and bridges leading to schools and colleges are in proper shape. The skywalk near Maharani college will get escalators. In the 2019-20 budget, we’ve earmarked Rs 1,200 crore for development of government educational institutions. Students of government colleges should not lag in any aspect. They must get world-class infrastructure like private colleges.”
