No ESMA in varsities

Update: 2018-11-28 05:30 IST

It may sound rather confusing and strange. Everybody understands that there is no relation between a University and ESMA. But with the recent MHRD'S circular, everybody agrees that justification has been done to the above title. As per the MHRD'S instructions, the UGC has constituted a working group for studying the Delhi University Act, 1922 with the intention of bringing duties of teaching profession like examination, evaluation, teaching, learning etc under purview of ESMA(Essential Services Maintenance Act),1968.

This alarming move is a part of the grand strategy to dismantle the public-funded, secular  education system in the country. This attempt to bring ESMA into Higher Education system is the attack on the very idea of University, which are built on Nehruvian ideals despite the limitations in the implementation in Post-Independent India.

The universities should promote ideas even if they are conflicting. The teachers and their unions, which are organised and powerful, all over the country, should resist these moves in unison. They have to stand against the commercialisation and communalisation in general and ESMA and CCS rules in particular. - S J Raviprakash,  Kurnool
