Update: 2018-02-16 22:05 IST

The rift between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has widened further with the Supreme Court verdict on Cauvery water sharing with the decision being welcomed by the former while the latter against it.

Expressing shock over the verdict that reduced Tamil Nadu’s allocated share by 14.75 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet), reasoning the supply drinking water to Bengaluru city (4.75tmcft), AIADMK Rajya Sabha member A Navanatheekrishnan called it a setback and plan to take appropriate action.

Blaming the state for foregoing the TN’s rights in the dispute, DMK working president MK Stalin urged the government to call an all-party meeting to discuss the SC verdict.

DMK senior leader and former PWD minister S Duraimurugan called the verdict unjust adding that the AIADMK government failed to present its case properly to the Supreme Court.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief S Thirunavukkarasar said that the successive Karnataka governments in the past never obeyed the orders of the court but welcomed the ruling saying that the river water was a national asset and none could claim ownership.

Meanwhile, CPM state secretary G Ramakrishnan expressed concerns over the delta region stating that the order will extensively affect the agriculture and farmer’s welfare.

TN BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan said they don’t welcome the verdict adding that Karnataka has been betraying TN for a long time and that the Tamil Nadu government must ensure the rights of the state.

On the other hand, former MP and leader of Raitha Hitarakshana Committee, which led the Cauvery agitation, G Madegowda welcomed the decision, however, he said that the order would be studied and discussed with legal experts before the next course of action is taken.
