Appa, you shouldn't drink after I die: 17-year-old commits suicide in Tamilnadu, blames father's alcoholism

A 17-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a rail overbridge here today as he was upset over his father's alcohol addiction, police said.

The body was found hanging from an overbridge on the Tirunelveli Bypass road in the district, they said.

A medical aspirant, the boy was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test examination (NEET).

He had written in a letter: “Appa, this is Dinesh writing this letter. You should not drink after I die. You should not light my pyre because you drink. You don't shave your head. To put it openly, you don't do my last rites. This is my wish. Only then my soul will rest in peace," reads the young man's suicide note.  Stop drinking at least now Appa. This is my wish. Only then I will be at peace.”

He had also sent out a message to EPS: “Let us see if the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister shuts down alcohol outlets at least now. If he doesn't, my spirit will come back to do it.”

A NEET hall ticket besides a purported suicide note, was found by police at the site.

Police said the boy, in his suicide note, wrote he committed suicide because he could not stop his father from drinking liquor.

In the note, he also urged the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy to save other families from the liquor menace by closing all liquor shops across the state, they said.
