Curfew imposed on Shillong after clashes

Section 144 has been imposed on some parts of Shillong following clashes, which occurred last night.

The incident started when a conductor got into an altercation with the locals when he was found to misbehaving with a woman, which resulted in him being assaulted. Co-workers of the conductor later came back to fight with the locals, which escalated violently into a clash involving weapons.

The police had to air fire tear gas to disperse the mob. Several were injured and a few vehicles were damaged.

The situation flared up again when a mob in Them Iew Mawlong  area attempted to march towards the police, who were immediately prevented from doing so.

To prevent anymore such incidents, which may cause communal tension, Section 144 has been imposed in certain areas in Shillong,Under East Khasi hill district.
