Protests against waste plant in Noida turn violent
The 4 day standoff between the residents of Noida and the Noida administration turned violent on Monday morning when the protesters threw rocks at the police. The police then responded with lathi charge and water cannons.The protests started on June 1st, when the government moved excavators to site for the waste plant.The residents are protesting due to health and environment concerns, as nearly five lakh people already live around the site of the waste plant.
Nearly 200 protesters had gathered on Monday morning from different housing sections, who stated that they would be taking the issue to court.
Around 47 people were arrested and charged with violating prohibitory orders,of which 26 were sent to judicial custody and the remaining got bail. Another 300 people were booked for rioting.
The district magistrate, B N Singh, stated that the work would not be stopping because of the protests.
According to a site inspection, the waste plant is located 175 metres from the nearest residential area, which is less than the prescribed 200 metres in Sector 123.
