Atal Bihari Vajpayee's condition said to be ‘critical’

 Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Monday was admitted to AIIMS and has been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection for which he is currently undergoing treatment. According to the sources in AIIMS, his condition is said to be critical with his sole kidney and lung performing at their lowest capacity.

A team of doctors are closely monitoring him. However, the chairperson of AIIMS’ media and protocol division, Aarti Vij said that his condition is stable and he will under supervision of AIIMS director Randeep Guleria who has been treating him for nearly 15 years.

The BJP stalwart, who has been ailing for long, has been bed-ridden since 2009 and suffering from lower respiratory tract infection and kidney- related issues.

Vajpayee, is diabetic and has only one functional kidney. He suffered a stroke in 2009 which affected his cognitive abilities and even developed dementia later on. Sources reveal that the  93-year-old recently developed fever and he aspirated something, but the immediate trigger for his hospitalisation could not be ascertained.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with several others including BJP chief Amit Shah, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, BJP veteran L K Advani and Union health minister J P Nadda visited the hospital.
