India asks UK if Nirav Modi got Mallya-like stay permit

Update: 2018-06-15 22:07 IST

NEW DELHI:Sources have stated that India has asked the UK home office if Modi has been granted an ILR. An ILR is a long term visa which grants a person legal protection against deportation. This would require India to file for extradition under the bilateral treaty.

On the other hand, if that is not the case India would be on much stronger ground to seek his deportation.UK is yet to respond to the query.A source has stated that India might file extradition with several countries, as Nirav Modi was constantly switching locations.

The Indian government has revoked his passport but, he is said to have another Indian passport under which he travelled to UK and Belgium. The second passport has also been revoked. The ED has retained information that Modi travelled to the UK multiple times using his revoked passport in March, though it is unclear on how he did so.
The CBI has also approached Interpol through the CBI for a red corner notice against Modi.
