India's worst water crisis in history - Here are 5 causes
India is suffering from 'the worst water crisis' in its history. About sixty crore people are facing high to extreme water stress, and about two lakh people are dying every year, due to inadequate access to safe water. This was stated in a report by the Niti Aayog last week.
"By 2030, the country's water demand is projected to be twice the available supply, implying severe water scarcity for hundreds of millions of people and an eventual six per cent loss in the country's GDP," the report noted.
In this year’s Economic Survey, the series of indicators show that India's water crisis is on the increase by leaps and bounds. Here are 10 charts explaining the five different but interrelated aspects of the shortfall of freshwater.
1. Groundwater depletion is rated the highest in India
2. There has been a plummet in the water table over time
3. Average temperatures are rising and rainfall is declining steadily
4. Monsoons, our only hope, are getting drier and hotter too
5. The level of rainfall is plunging in large areas of North and Central India
