Road overbridge collapses in Mumbai due to heavy rains

On Tuesday (June 3), a road overbridge collapsed due to heavy rains at 7.30 a.m. This caused the local train services to stop and it also affected few long distance trains. They were cancelled and rescheduled.

Five people were injured, two of them were seriously injured.

Dabbawalas, Mumbai's famous tiffin carriers conveyed their inability to operate as the train services were stopped. They will not deliver food as several members are stuck at various railway stations.

Piyush Goyal, Raliway minister, visited the place in the afternoon. He ordered an investigation by the Commissioner of Rail Safety whose report should be submitted in 15 days he said. He also promised that the train services would be repaired by night.

Thirty-five year old Asmita Katkar, one of the five, is in a criticat condition. She suffered a serious facial and head injury and the blood supply to one of her upper limbs has stopped. The doctors are trying to retrieve her arm.She was on her way back after dropping her six year old son. They walked on that route everyday.

Girdhari Singh and Manoj Mehta also suffered serious injuries. Mr Singh is in the surgical intensive care unit and Mr Mehta has been shifted to Nanavati Hospital where he is undergoing a surgery.

Morning walkers often use this bridge and a bigger causality was prevented as people stayed home due to heavy rains.

While a Western Railway spokesman said the bridge came under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the civic body claimed it was a railway property.

The overhead wires of all six lines were affected due to the collapse. People travelling from Andheri East to Andheri West will need to use the Andheri subway.

The Mumbai University has announced that the students who missed the exams because of the accident can reappear again.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will run extra buses to help passengers stranded at the affected railway stations.

Uber has turned off dynamic pricing for the day due to heavy rainfall and severe waterlogging in Mumbai. They said that they are trying to ensure the availability of ubers on the road. They also said that they encourage the people to pool together and share their ride with their fellow travelers traveling in the same direction.
