Heavy overnight downpour claims lives of over 7 people in Bhopal

BHOPAL: On account of heavy overnight rainfall in Bhopal, four people including three minors died in incidents related to the rainlash on Tuesday. 15 cm of rainfall has been recorded overnight in the MP state capital.

According to Bhopal mayor Alok Sharma, three people died after wall a collapsed near Kilol Park, closeby the Lower Lake. A woman and her two children died, the father is admitted in Hamidia hospital. Another incident took place where a 15-year-old boy died after he slipped into an overflowing drain in Indira Nagar slum in Teela Jamalpura area on Monday night. The mayor said that Rs 4 lakh would be given to the family members as relief.

“The situation is being monitored. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue till the low pressure system in next 24 hours,” said district collector Sudam Khade. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident at Kilol Park where three members of a family died.

The body of 15-year-old Basheer is being seeked for recovery by search and rescue operations which are in progress. While he was crossing a 10-metre iron walkway in the slum area around 2 am, Basheer slipped into a drain.

Many low-lying areas of the city are reported to be subject of knee-deep water. Heavy rainfall in the city began at around midnight and lasted for four hours. During the last 24 hours from 8:30am on Monday, Raisen recorded 165mm of rains, Bhopal 154mm, Khandwa 95mm, Narsingpur 62mm, Jabalpur 58mm, Guna 48mm, Dhar 47mm, Indore 37mm, Khargone 41mm, Rewa 28mm and Khajuraho 22mm.

The state is being affected by low pressure area over Bay of Bengal. For another 24 hours approximately, moderate to heavy showers will continue over west Madhya Pradesh.
