New Delhi: An alleged criminal was injured in an "encounter" with the police in east Delhi early on Tuesday morning.

Salim, 38, wanted in several cases, was caught while trying to escape by allegedly firing at a police party that intercepted his two-wheeler in Jagat Puri at around 4.15 am, said Pankaj Singh, deputy commissioner of police (east).

A trap had been laid at Karkari Mor on a tip-off that Salim was coming to Delhi from Bareilly.

He was spotted riding a scooty and, when intercepted, he allegedly tried to fire at Sub-Inspector Shyam Vihari and Head Constable Praveen Yadav, who were manning the barricade.

In retaliation, Vihari fired a shot in air and warned him to surrender. But, he again fired a shot that hit Yadav's bulletproof vest at the chest. The policemen fired in retaliation and one shot hit Salim in the right leg, Singh said.

Salim was apprehended from the spot and taken to a hospital for treatment, the officer said.

Police got information about Salim after his accomplice, Sandeep Narang, 29, was caught on Monday, he said.

During interrogation, Narang had disclosed that Salim was coming to Delhi to meet him for carrying out a crime, he added.
