Update: 2018-11-01 17:04 IST

BENGALURU: In the past few days, Bellandur Lake water level has reduced with the lakebed being visible in some places. Now, the lake looks dark with flat all over its surface, indicating a high degree of pollution.
K Elangovan, member of a citizen group in Whitefield, said the lake looked extremely filthy with a lot of black effluents on the surface on Wednesday.“The lake has started drying up,” he added. Pranathi K, a regular commuter on the lake road, said she addressed a big dry patch on the lake closer to the old airport runway. “Reduction in water level only showing how badly the waterbody has been polluted,” she added.

BA Shivananda, engineering officer at the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), the custodian of the lake, said: “The drying up of the lake could be due to reduced inflow of sewage or prolonged dry spell over the past few weeks. Following an alert from residents, we have closed the sluice gates of the downstream.”
Asked whether the depletion in water level is due to deflection of the same to Kolar under the KC Valley water treatment project, BDA officials said they don’t have any justification about it.
