Hyderabad: The unique smart addressing solution for urban dwellings (USASUD) project of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has gone for a toss due to legal fight between two private agencies. Officials fear that the project may be permanently on hold if the legal hurdle is not cleared. The GHMC will proceed only after seeking clarifications (whether to handover the project to the same agency or not) from the legal experts, they said.

According to a GHMC official, USASUD has been proposed keeping in mind the benefits of providing navigation details and address location services. He said the initiative becoming a success at Domalguda in Hyderabad where digital number plates were fixed to the houses and also street signboards, the GHMC officials had decided to implement the same across the city. However, the officials said the project will be taken up only after clearing the legal glitches.

When queried about the issue, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the civic body had already finalised the tender for a private agency but it was now facing legal problems to take up the project. He said another private agency has approached the court that the agency for which the GHMC had finalised the tender was not eligible to take up the project.

He said the corporation is now contemplating to either seek clarification from legal experts or call for fresh tenders. He said the civic body is also contemplating to put the project permanently on hold. The GHMC official further said the civic body has fixed about Rs 60 per each digital plate for 22 lakh households in the city limits.

He said once the project was handed over to the private agency that firm would look after its maintenance for 15 years. He said the new addressing solution has been proposed in order to provide the public, navigation details and address location services. The digital numbers would ensure address location services to the people within the GHMC limits. He also said the addressing solution would involve a GIS-based map where the numbering scheme allows geo-location and navigation services.
