Men in Blue humble South Africa in 2nd ODI
Yuzvendra Chahal celebrates with Jasprit Bumrah after his career-best 5/22 destroyed South Africa and helped India win the second ODI at Centurion by an overwhelming nine wickets.
Apart from establishing a 2-0 lead in the six-game series, India also managed to regain the top spot in the ICC rankings. After dismissing Proteas for 118 runs, their lowest ODI score on home soil, the Men in Blue accomplished the target in 20.3 overs.
Centurion: India produced a dominant performance to thrash South Africa by nine wickets in the second One-Day International (ODI) at the SuperSport Park here on Sunday. They also regained the ICC top ranking in ODIs.
Opting to field first, the Indians rode on career best figures from wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav to bundle out South Africa for a mere 118 runs, their lowest ever ODI total at this venue.
Chahal returned figures of 5/22 while Yadav notched up 3/20 to justify India skipper Virat Kohli's decision to field first on winning the toss. Fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar bagged a wicket each. In reply, Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan added 93 runs between them as the visitors romped to victory with 177 balls still to go.
The match also drew plenty of criticism after the umpires decided to take the lunch break with India needing just two runs. It was an extended session anyway but many thought using common sense and getting on with the game would have been a far better idea than sticking to the 'sanctified' rule.
Earlier, Kohli won the toss and decided to have a bowl on a wicket that was expected to help spinners a great deal. Dhawan remained unbeaten on 51 runs off 56 balls while Kohli was not out on 46.
Pacer Kagiso Rabada's dismissal of opener Rohit Sharma in the fourth over was the only success the South African bowlers managed on the day.
India now lead the six-match series 2-0.
Brief scores: South Africa 118 in 32.2 overs (Jean-Paul Duminy 25, Khaya Zondo 25, Yuzvendra Chahal 5/22, Kuldeep Yadav 3/20) lost to India: 119 for one wicket in 20.3 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 51no, Virat Kohli 46no)
