Foods that cause migraines

Update: 2018-08-05 05:30 IST

If you have never had a migraine in your life, you are a blessed human. The incapacitating pain that comes along with migraines is essentially due to a certain trigger, which can be from a variety of things. What I have observed that triggers range from foods, smells, smoke, environment like sunlight or even stress or lack of sleep. Migraines don’t only bring with them a weakening pain but can be accompanied by nausea, dizziness and sensitivity to light and sound. They can range from three hours to three days. Watch out if any of the above can cause a headache. This will help you reduce the number of times you get knocked out because of a migraine and you could prevent them too.

One such trigger from your daily life is food. This isn’t only based on what kind of food you eat but also at what time you are eating it. Food along with other factors such as not eating for too long can cause migraines and it is with food that you can fight a migraine. A few nutrients found in foods tend to be either a direct or an ancillary trigger to give you a “migraine brain” and this brain in general doesn’t like change. I have observed with my clients’ what foods trigger migraines and what can reduce pains and the onset of migraines and I am going to share them with you.

Use foods like ginger, herbal infusions made from chamomile and peppermint to help treat migraines. Foods that are rich in fibres and magnesium are foods that help fight a migraine; this food group includes fruits, vegetables, brown rice, barley oats broccoli, spinach (in fact all greens) whole grains and kidney beans. Besides food you could also drink plenty of water, deep breathing techniques along with yoga and regular exercise can keep migraines at bay.

If you pay attention to what you are eating, you will know what triggers your migraine. Keep checks on all foods you have eaten thus giving you a basic outline of what to avoid. Try to maintain a diet which is rich in fibres, fresh foods and no packaged and processed foods which are brimming with chemicals and preservatives.
