Memoir of a Woman
Masih Alinejad’s ‘The Wind in my Hair – My Fight for Freedom in Modern Era’ is the story of an Iranian woman from being a child living in a village to a rebellious teenager and a courageous journalist. The curls in Masih’s hair were hard to control, yet they were tucked into a scarf, so that not even a strand is bared to the world.
For Masih the hijab was a symbol of oppression and along the fight for freedom of expression, and fight for equal rights that she had to wage in each stage of her life, it is this fight for the choice to wear a hijab, which she chose not to wear that became a significant aspect of her life.
The book showcases a woman’s struggle in a male dominated world and as a journalist the writer also gives glimpses of changes and development in Iranian politics which played a major role in the changing face of women’s rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In addition to being an inspiring tale of a fearless journalist writing the truth in the face of danger, it is also about looking at the little known part of the world from the eyes of an insider.
