Cactus, the new superfood

 Cactus is one of the healthiest foods that you can include in your daily diet. The crop from the arid region is abundant with health benefits. Chevella Farms, a social enterprise, which aims to help farmers and create employment for rural women introduces Nopales Cactus, a valuable crop, especially for food and livestock feed in dryland areas. The event which was held at Olive Bistro, Hyderabad was attended by Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, entrepreneur and Member of Parliament, Chevella, Telangana, along with other dignitaries.
 
Chef Viraf Patel & Mixologist Pankaj Ahire have used this innovative product and have gotten a menu crafted for this special occasion using the Nopales Cactus. From innovative dishes like Prawn & Cactus Ceviche to Spicy Isan style cactus pad curry with rice, the chef showcased a delicious menu.

Speaking on the occasion, Vishweshwar Reddy, said “Nopales Cactus is a delicacy in Mexico, Italy, Spain and other dryland countries. It has significant health benefits It is an antioxidant, it lowers cholesterol and helps control diabetes. As a crop, it does not require fertilisers or pesticides or even water. It is a hope for farmers of Chevella Parliament constituency which is arid and has very little chance for irrigation water.”
The Cactus pads would soon be brought to market in the coming months.
