Oscar trophy's everlasting shine - NASA Technology behind it

The coveted Oscar trophy’s everlasting shine should be credited to NASA technology. According to NASA, the trophy is coated with the same gold which helps telescopes glimpse distant galaxies, protecting the hard-earned prize and ensuring it never loses its shine.

Since the 1970s, US-based Epner Technology has been working with NASA and has improved its electroplating technique doing aerospace work in the 1990s.

The company President David Epner claims that the gold coating on the trophy would never flake off further offering a lifetime guarantee to replate, for free, for any Oscar that starts to lose shine.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences teamed up with Epner in 2016 following its reputation for durable and brilliant gold coatings.

For more than three decades, the Oscars have been made of tin alloy and then plated with gold. While they shone, the coating eventually wore off. With the use of an electroplating process called LaserGold, Epner’s company provides the resulting coating harder and more reflective than vapour-deposited gold. However, the company's collaboration with NASA helped further improve the process.
