Hyderabad: Launching the Mission Bhagiratha scheme to provide safe drinking waters to people in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao on Thursday promised to provide all basic amenities to the people and to develop the twin cities on a rapid pace. In the first phase, he launched four reservoirs at Gopanpally, Nallagnadla, KPHB Phase-4, Huda Miyapur areas along with Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy and others.
Speaking on the occasion, Rama Rao said supply of potable drinking waters under the GHMC limits and inside the ORR on the outskirts of the city would help prove handy for the people. Of the 12 reservoirs planned, he launched four, which were constructed well in advance and tap connection for just Rs. 1 per house. “Since getting safe drinking water is a fundamental right of the people, the government is focusing on providing them by spending adequate funds,” he remarked.
He gave a pat to the officials concerned for completing the reservoirs 11 months in advance, as per a call from Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.Stating that the GHMC was ready to give any number of tap connections through a special drive as out of 21 lakh families only 9.20 lakh families took the tap connections so far, he said that Rs 1,900 crore was being spent for constructing 1,800 km long pipeline for implementation of the water scheme.
Of 56 reservoirs, 46 would be completed in two years, he said, adding that a 20 tmc ft capacity reservoir would be constructed at Keshapur near Shamirpet to cater to the needs even if Hyderabad population grew by five times. “They are spending Rs 628 crore to supply water to 180 villages in the ORR limits. It is being planned to supply daily drinking water to the people of twin cities if Hyderabad receives good rainfall this season and took the issue as a challenge. We are giving fruits of Mission Bhagiratha to the 160 colonies in the city,” Rama Rao said.
